Painted Harlequin Diamond Walls in the Nursery

July 20, 2009 by Dawn Papandrea-Khan Leave a Comment

Painted harlequin diamonds are a wonderful design for an accent wall as you see in the picture below.  You can get creative with the 2 colors that you decide to use.  You can also use a muted glaze or even metallic paint with glaze to give a more modern feel.

Though this next room is not necessarily a nursery, I think it is so cute.  I love the white furniture against the pink diamond designs.  They used buttons on the edges of each diamond.  you can get creative with you want to use.  Some use gems, ribbons, gold buttons, or anything else that you think would tie it all together.

If you are a DIYer, then her is a great video that will walk you through how to achieve a painted harlequin diamond wall finish:

In this picture, you will see that metallics were used.  I just love how creative it is.  Check out that funky lamp!

Circus Tent and Animals Nursery Mural Themes

July 16, 2009 by Dawn Papandrea-Khan 2 Comments

Circus-main_Full

How many of you LOVE the circus?

I have always loved the circus ever since I was a little girl.  My parents took my brother and I to see quite a few circus events when we were kids – a few really big ones like Barnum Bailey and a few local ones.  But I always remember them being so much fun.  There were always so many things to see – circus clowns, circus animals, cirus acrobats and so much more.

The circus reminds me of fun and smiles.  I used to be in awe as a kid.  The best circuses though, are the ones under the big striped circus tent.  I have yet to take my little ones to the circus, but I really want to.  I know they would love it.

I think a circus theme would be a great idea for a baby nursery.  You can really get creative.  One of the best ways to turn a nursery into a circus room is to paint the room to look as if you are inside of a circus tent like this one below.  The work is tedious, but if you can afford to hire a professional – it might be worth your while!  Doesn’t it look awesome?

You can also paint the circus tent onto one wall as if you are looking inside or outside at all the animals.  I think this one is so adorable with the baby cutsie animals.  Lauren from Sweet Pease did this one.

600_circus_mural

You really don’t even need the circus tent.  You can keep it simple by just adding the circus animals.

This is another simple option.  The artist painted an outline with the tent stripes in 2 different colors surrounding the crib and a hand painted border.  You can do something like this as the back drop for all of your circus themed nursery accessories.

I think this last one is soooo cute!  I love the creativity of the custom designed animal silhouettes  in bright colors against the blue stripes.  This could be done very easily by tracing an outline of the animal images onto the wall with an overhead projector and then painting it in.  The stripes would be the hard part, but even that can be accomplished with some good measuring and LOTS of delicate surfaces blue painters tape.  I found this picture on www.kariandkijsa.blogspot.com.  Be sure to check out their post on how they did it!

Monogram Nursery Wall Lettering

July 3, 2009 by Dawn Papandrea-Khan 2 Comments

How about doing monogram lettering above the crib with your baby’s initials?  I really love this idea.  You can tie in the colors of the bedding and window treatments within the lettering.

In this picture, which I found at www.thepinkazalea.com, they did white monogram lettering on coffee brown colored walls.  I love how they did more decorative lettering for the girl and bolder simple lettering for the boy.  And that white chandelier adds so much charm.  Notice that the crib bedding matches, but one is in blue and one is in pink.  I think they did a really great job in this twin’s nursery.

How about pink on pink?  This is actually a removable wall decal that can be purchased at www.poshtots.com in several color options.

I found this next one on www.worddecor-n-more.com.  They offer a wide array of lettering and words.  You can even customize your own.

Vinyl-Monogram-with-Name-Ov

This one is my favorite.  I love how they integrated the monogram right into the border.  I also love the beige, blue and white color combination.  This is perfect for a boy’s room.  This type of look is something that he can grow with and enjoy for years to come.  By the way, I found this picture at www.whitneyenglish.com.  It was done by Julie from www.lemontreepaperie.com.  Great job mama!

ltpnursery

This last one I like because it looks like they ay have used a metallic gold for the first and last initial in the monogram lettering.  The W also looks like it may have been done in a gloss finish paint so it looks like it pops against the pink walls.  Again, a simple but yet elegant decor idea for the nursery.

MorgansNursery

There are several monogram options that you can go with:

1. Stenciled Lettering – There are MANY companies that offer stenciled letters in all different sizes.  But you will have to make sure you practice your stencil technique. You want to make sure you don’t overload your brush with paint because it will seep through the stencil and bleed onto the wall causing it to looks sloppy.

3. Hand Painted – Of course, this would be my favorite, just because you can come up with your own font style, size, etc.  The easiest way to hand paint lettering on the wall is to use an overhead projector.  Project the lettering on the wall, trace with a pencil and the paint in the lines.  This is tedious work, especially if the font is a scrolly or detailed font.  But there is nothing like putting your sweat into something that is filled with love for your child.

2. Vinyl Lettering or Wall Decals – This option takes the least amount of work.  All you have to do is order the letters and slap them on the wall – easy peasy.  Just make sure you get the ones that are removable and won’t destroy the wall if you want to take them down later on.

Well, I hope you enjoyed this really great nursery wall decor idea.  Stay tuned for more and remember… I always love to hear inspiration & ideas from my readers!

Nursery Murals and More has a NEW LOOK!

July 2, 2009 by Dawn Papandrea-Khan 1 Comment

blog_makover_small

I decided to move this site from Blogger to WordPress and give it a well deserved makeover.  I was just sharing with someone the other day that the reason why I started this site was to have a place to keep all of my research for reference materials.  When a client asks me to do a baby nursery mural, I often research ideas online and print them out to show the client when I meet with them for the initial consult.  I found so many wonderful nursery mural ideas done by other artists and decided to start a blog so that I could create a post for each fun theme or category that I come across.

I had no idea that it would grow into something this big.  This site now gets over 8,000 visitors per month and we have almost 300 subscribers.   And these numbers are growing everyday.   I just want to say thank you to all of my faithful readers.  I am hoping to post new ideas once a week and I am also open to your thoughts and ideas as well.  Please pass on the inspiration so I can share with my readers.

Thanks again for all of your support.  I hope to turn this site into something even more special than it was before.  🙂

Sophisticated Nursery Decor & Mural Ideas

June 14, 2009 by Dawn Papandrea-Khan 2 Comments

I am so in love with these nurseries so much sophistication and style! I found these on HGTV.com’s Rate My Space site.

rms_French-Toile-Nursery_s4x3_lg

These are not as elaborate, but the murals really give the room class. I love this one with the carousel horses on either side of the crib. Love the soft color palette. This one and the next one were done by Mary Grace Nichol.

This nursery is so gorgeous! I love the pink and fern green combination with the harlequin diamonds and the hand painted flowering vines – just enough.

The following two are of scroll / swag / flower designs above the crib. There is just something about a flower swag over the crib that is really sophisticated.

Hot Air Balloon Nursery Themed Murals

Just when I think that I am all out of ideas – I find another really great Nursery Mural Theme idea for both girls and boys!

HOT AIR BALLOON Nursery Murals!

You can get really creative with colors in all the different balloons!

This is really cute with the wording. So simple, but adds so much fun to a room!

www.artisticalternatives.com

This is a very soft mural. As you can see in this one, you don’t even need to paint the entire wall. Just blend in the landscape in the base color.

www.unique-baby-gear-ideas.com

I love this nursery with the Americana feel. Blue, Red, and Tan – great colors. They even tied in a denim faux finish under the chair rail (leave it to the decorative painter to notice that. LOL)

www.hgtv.com

So, if you would like to be different and create a unique baby nursery for your child, consider doing a Hot Air Balloon Themed Nursery. You can even add to it later as your child gets older with a princess castle for girls or trains & plains for boys.

I would love to hear your ideas for a nursery mural theme. Leave me a comment on a theme that you find interesting and I will do the research and come up with a post focused on that theme. I am always looking for fun new ideas!

By the way, if you are already a mom, be sure to stop by my blog called “Painter Mommy”. It post about the everyday life of a mom along with some fun videos, reviews, and even giveaways. Subscribe to receive updates directly into your email.

My Wonderful Walls is Helping the Community

May 24, 2009 by Dawn Papandrea-Khan Leave a Comment

Do you all remember “My Wonderful Walls“? I did a Giveaway recently for one of their DIY stencil murals. We got a really great response!

Since then, I have had the opportunity of corresponding with Michael (the husband of the husband and wife team. He just let me know that they would like to offer my readers a special discount code for $5.00 off any purchase from their site – www.mywonderfulwalls.com The code is s123.

They also sent me one of their custom canvas murals which I had made with my daughter’s name. She is 3 years old and she absolutely loves it. Here is a picture of her and her picture.

These canvas murals come already made. They have several themes to choose from – flowers, transportation, farm, jungle safari, and underwater. And as you can see, some can even be customized with your child’s name. Each mural runs around $45. But if you use the coupon code that they have provided for us, one of these awesome murals will only cost you $40! You really should take advantage of this great deal!

Another wonderful thing about this company is that they also are passionate about helping out in the community. They started a special mural giving program. I don’t know about you, but it means a whole lot more purchasing from a company that you know is giving back to those who need it.

They are currently installing a variety of their canvas murals, for free, in all the inpatient rooms at T.C. Thompsons Children’s hospital. They have 52 bare rooms that they are trying to fill. They are partnering with various blogs and website owners to help support the idea. They are asking for our help by putting their banner with link on their home page and they donate a mural monthly or bi-monthly in that specific blogger’s name, depending on the popularity of their site. They call it Growing Through Giving. It helps their company grow and helps bring some cheer to kids who need it. Isn’t that great? I love it! Check out these pictures that they just sent of them installing the pictures in the hospital.

So, if you are interested in grabbing their button to put on your site or blog or even interested in donating a canvas mural for this great cause, please leave your name, email address, and blog URL in the comment below and we will get back with you with the details.

And don’t forget the discount code! Hop on over to the My Wonderful Walls site and check out all the great stuff to help make boring children’s room walls into something FABULOUS!

Train Themed Nursery Mural Ideas

May 7, 2009 by Dawn Papandrea-Khan 1 Comment

Train_5814820
www.crayoncastles.com

My son (4) and daughter (3) have recently started talking a lot about trains. After our last trip to a local park we stopped by a small train station and decided to park the car and wait for a train to go by. The kids were sooooo excited. We waited and waited and FINALLY we heard the sound of the train’s whistle in the distance. It got louder and louder and then there it was, this big huge transportation machine. What a thrill for my children. Since then, they have been asking me everyday to watch this train video that we have. They have always loved Thomas the Train, but this video is actually about REAL trains.

So, on that note, I have decided to gather up some Train Nursery Mural Pictures.

This one is cute and can be done easily by any of you DIYers out there. I like how they incorporated the child’s name in the smoke.

www.artwray.com

Check out the artist in action! Makes me want to paint another nursery. Can’t wait for my next mural job call actually. 🙂

www.wellart.com

Love how they added the railroad crossing sign. Great touch!

www.michelecahill.com

This one is my favorite. I love how it is not a full on mural. The artist used the greenery to narutally incorporate the scene into the beige base paint color. Doesn’t the red just POP?

www.muralsbyjane.com

I also like this one because of the use of primary colors. Can you see the little deer peeking out from the bush?

Teresa Stern – Decorative Decisions

All of the above train murals are pretty simple. I’ll tell ya, boys never get sick of transporation vehicles such as trains, planes, trucks, motorcycles. I think TRAINS is a great boy’s nursery mural theme to go with. What do you think?
